Dinner supporting refugees and other updates
Hi Friends,
It's been a busy and exhilarating fall. I'm writing to share some updates and let you know about a few meaningful events at which I'd love to see you.
Last month I served as chef and scholar-in-residence on a culinary heritage tour of Lithuania and Poland, which was a dream come true . . . and a few years in the making (see more below). I began teaching a course at The City College of New York on the anthropology of Jewish food for an incredibly diverse class. It's been immensely gratifying, and I've already signed on to teach again in the spring. I've also been collaborating with leading scholars and cookbook authors to produce an online course for YIVO all about Ashkenazi food, culture, and history (coming May 2020, stay tuned)!
These are just a handful of highlights. See below for exciting upcoming events. Lots more to come in 2020. You can always find more info. at the newly revamped jeffreyyoskowitz.com.
I hope to see you soon!
Jeffrey
Graduation Dinner at Emma's Torch | December 12, Brooklyn, NY
I'll be serving as guest chef at the Graduation Dinner at Emma's Torch, a Brooklyn-based non-profit that provides culinary training to refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking (you can read more in The New Yorker). The students learn during the day and run the kitchen at their Carroll Gardens restaurant at night. The multi-course, family style graduation dinners are meaningful and fun ways to experience the amazing work the organization is doing (and to support that work). Students from all over the world choose delicacies from their home countries for the graduation dinner and I’ll be working with and supporting them . . . and preparing a couple of dishes of my own. As the grandson of refugees, the work of Emma’s Torch resonates deeply with me and feels especially urgent. I’d love it if you’d consider joining for this special evening. Please note that the dinner will be pescatarian. Spaces are quite limited, so please sign up soon. Ticket and event info. here.
All About the Fat | December 11th, Brooklyn, NY
A Hanukkah talk and tasting all about the cooking fats that the holiday rightly celebrates at MOFAD (Museum of Food and Drink) with LA-based cookbook author Amelia Saltsman, my Gefilteria partner Liz Alpern, and journalist Devra Ferst. Info here.
Back to the Old Country | December 15th, Hartford, CT
I'll be giving a public lecture based on my travels in eastern Europe for the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford and their European roots project. Info here.
Culinary Heritage Tour | Summer 2020, Poland
As noted above, I developed a culinary heritage tour in partnership with Taube Jewish Heritage Tours and the award-winning POLIN museum in Warsaw. It was a powerful experience and a unique way of experiencing the region and its complex history (and cuisine). I am excited to be planning another tour in August. If you’re interested in learning more or being contacted when the tour gets posted, please let me know here.
